Mobility Scooters on Cardiff Bus Services

At Cardiff Bus, we are committed to making travel accessible and safe for all customers, so we're making some improvements in line with industry standards. Mobility scooter users will soon need to meet the requirements set out which includes an assessment carried out by registered operators to ensure you and your Mobility Scooter are safe and suitable to travel. Permits are issued and accepted by any of the operators that have signed up to the Confederation of Passenger Transport Mobility Scooter Code. Click here for further details. The scheme sets out size and safety requirements for scooters that are suitable for bus travel.

Do I Need a Permit?

Yes. All customers wishing to travel with a mobility scooter must apply and be assessed for a Cardiff Bus Mobility Scooter Permit before travelling.

The permit scheme helps us confirm that:

• Your scooter is suitable for bus travel
• You can safely manoeuvre the scooter on and off the bus
• Your scooter can be positioned safely within the wheelchair space

Customers approved under the scheme will receive a permit card which must be carried whenever travelling.

Which Scooters Are Accepted?

Only Class 2 mobility scooters are suitable for carriage on buses.

Scooters must:

• Be a Class 2 scooter
• Have 3 or 4 wheels
• Fit within the designated wheelchair space

Users must be able to safely board using the bus ramp and have a combined weight (scooter and user) within safe operating limits-Please see details below. Unsafe, or larger Class 3 scooters are not permitted on Cardiff Bus services.

How to Apply

We will be offering a series of pop-up assessment events at local Council Hubs and leisure centres where available, across Cardiff, Penarth and Barry over the coming weeks, locations, dates and times TBC. As well as regular ongoing opportunities to get assessed at our Leckwith Depot on Sloper Road. Please look out for location updates below as we may be visiting your local area soon.

These events will give customers the opportunity to:

• Have their mobility scooter assessed
• Learn how to safely board and travel on our buses
• Receive a Cardiff Bus Mobility Scooter Permit.

When will this be introduced?

We understand that not everyone will be able to get assessed straight away, so have allowed a grace period until 30th August 2026. Until then, drivers may advise you of the need to get assessed and who to contact for help. 

How do I get to the bus depot?

If you're bringing a car, you can park in one of our visitor bays. If you're catching a bus here, 1 & 2 stop outside while 92, 93, 94 and 95 stop nearby. 

Important Information

• You may be refused travel if any of the above criteria has not been met.
• Customers must always follow driver instructions when boarding and travelling.

Size and weight limits

• ≤600mm width / ≤1000mm length
• ≤1200mm turning radius
• Within ramp SWL (300kg)
