16 - 21 year olds
From 31 August 2025, the Welsh Government launched a 12-month pilot scheme to make bus travel more affordable for young people aged 16–21 (up to their 22nd birthday).
- Single fares are capped at £1
- Multi-operator day tickets capped at £3

Weekly and 4-weekly tickets will continue to be available at a 1/3 discount. Other youth day tickets will no longer be available to buy on bus or via our app.

mytravelpass – Your Key to Savings
To benefit from these discounted fares, you’ll need a My Travel Pass (MTP).
- You must show your pass when buying or using a youth ticket.
- Apply online via the Transport for Wales website.
- Your pass will be posted to you once processed.
Buying Single Tickets
- Show your My Travel Pass to the driver.
- Ask for a single ticket and pay by cash, contactless, or Apple/Android Pay.
- Valid for one journey on the same bus – please keep your ticket for the duration of travel.
⚠️ Without a valid My Travel Pass, you’ll need to pay the normal adult fare.
Buying & Using Day Tickets
On Bus
- Show your My Travel Pass to the driver and request a Youth Day Ticket.
- Pay by cash, contactless, or Apple/Android Pay.
- The ticket will include a QR code – scan it when re-boarding and show your My Travel Pass to confirm eligibility.
On the Cardiff Bus App
- The ticket must be activated before travel.
- Once activated, it’s valid across participating operators until last bus that day.
- The ticket will include a QR code – scan it when re-boarding and show your My Travel Pass to confirm eligibility.
Weekly, Monthly and Annual Tickets
- Still available with a 1/3 discount compared to adult fares.
- Valid only on Cardiff Bus services (not other operators).
- Can be used with either a My Travel Pass as proof of eligibility.
