Catch the Bus Week 2019

28 days ago Tue 25th Jun 2019

1 – 7 July 2019

Cardiff Bus are thrilled to be taking part in the national Catch the Bus Week campaign again this year.  The campaign, which is organised by Greener Journeys and is in its 7th year, aims to highlight the benefits of taking the bus, not only for individuals but for the environment and the local community, and to inspire people to leave the car at home and take the bus to their next destination.  So if you know a petrol-head, why not encourage them to give the bus a go?

How we're celebrating CTBW

  • We'll be running competitions* on our Facebook and Twitter pages throughout the week, so swat up on the facts below because they might just help you!
  • We will be rewarding customers who purchase tickets on our app between Sunday 30th June and Sunday 7th of July.  Purchase a day to go ticket for your chance to win a week to go, or purchase a week to go ticket and you could win a 4 week to go!
  • Join us on Tuesday 2nd of July as we park up a bus outside the Capitol shopping centre on Queen Street between 10am and 2pm.  Pop over for a chat, for information or just for a look around one of our buses.
  • Keep your eyes peeled for Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan councillors who will be catching the bus to show their support for the campaign.
  • Facts about the benefits of bus travel and stats about Cardiff Bus will be posted on our social media platforms.

* all entries will be pooled together from Facebook and Twitter and one winner will be selected at random.  Winners from Friday, Saturday and Sunday's competitions will be announced on Monday 8th of July.

Benefits of bus travel

The following facts have been provided by Greener Journeys

Environmentally Friendly

  • A fully loaded double-decker bus can take 75 single occupied cars off the road.
  • If everyone switched just one car journey a month to the bus, there would be one million fewer car journeys on our roads, and a saving of 2 million tonnes of CO2
  • Buses are vital to improving air quality.  The latest models deliver a 95% reduction in NOx emissions compared to previous bus models
  • Diesel cars are the biggest contributor to road transport NOx emissions in the Uk, contributing 41% of emissions compared with 30% for diesel vans and just 6% for buses and coaches.

Health and Wellbeing

  • Travelling by bus is good for your health. It is a third less stressful than commuting by car
  • Taking the bus frees your hands and your head, allowing you to catch up on life admin, read a book or play games on your mobile, especially with our free WiFi!
  •  Walking to the bus stop can, on average, help you achieve half the Government’s recommended 30 minutes of exercise per day
  • A third of drivers consider driving a chore because of high fuel costs and increased congestion

  • Every £1 invested in bus infrastructure can generate more than £8 of economic benefit
  • Bus revenue funding delivers £3.70 of economic benefit for each £1 spent
  • Bus commuters generate £64 billion of benefits to the UK economy
  • Buses help tackle congestion, which costs the UK economy at least £11 billion each year

This year’s theme

This year’s Catch the Bus Week will focus on loneliness and how buses can help people stay connected. This follows work that Greener Journeys has been undertaking in partnership with the Government to highlight the important role that buses play in helping to tackle isolation.  The survey found that a third of people (33 per cent) deliberately catch the bus to have some human contact.

At Cardiff Bus, we are encouraging our customers to talk to one another, even if it’s just a morning greeting.
