*Recruitment Day*

Join us at our depot on Sloper Road on Saturday 19th of October to find out about our current driving vacancies.  We'll be on-site between 10am and 3pm to discuss the role and training you will receive.  Pop in to talk to a member of staff and find out more.

Thank you for considering a career with Cardiff Bus as a PCV driver.  Before completing and returning your application to us, please take the time to read the information below and ensure you fully understand what the role entails, and who we are looking for.

Driving licence requirements

  • You must have held a valid United Kingdom driving licence for a MINIMUM of twelve months.
  • You must have no more than THREE penalty points on your licence at the time of application
  • You must have no pending motoring offences at the time of application
  • We will not accept an application if you have convictions for certain driving offences such as driving without due care and attention, alcohol/drug related offences and mobile phone use etc.

There are also certain health and wellbeing criteria, including weight limits.  Please click here to contact our HR team for clarification.

Becoming a PCV Driver

We expect all our employees to provide a first-rate customer experience for our customers.

The PCV driving role requires excellent customer service skills, therefore you will be expected to always be polite, helpful and friendly.  We really are looking for a ‘people’s person’.

You will be placed in a position of trust, as you will not only be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of our customers, but also for other road users.

Successful applicants who display the skills above during an interview will need to pass a medical examination which is required by law in order to hold a PCV licence.  Please note, there is also a personal weight limit of 18 stone or 114Kg for this role.

Your driving licence will also be subject to regular checks throughout employment with us.

Our professional instructors will provide intensive training to help you with your PCV Theory and Hazard Perception as well as the practical driving test.

After successfully passing your PCV test we will provide bespoke operational and customer service training as well as “in service” training with a mentor, serving genuine customers to ensure that you are confident in your new role and have the required skills.

Throughout your training you will be paid the training rate of pay. Once you are operating solo without assistance you will be paid a competitive rate of pay.  If you already have a PCV licence this rate is different.

How much will my training cost?

Cardiff Bus will pay for your training, providing you remain at the company for more than 2 years.  Once you have passed your PCV practical test, Cardiff Bus will deduct £10 per week from your wages as part of a bond.  When you complete 2 years’ continuous service this money will be paid back to you as a lump sum.  If, for whatever reason you leave the company within the first 2 years, you will be required to pay for your training.

What does the job entail?

We offer a vital service to our local community.  Our buses not only help customers to commute to their workplace, but they offer freedom to many people who wouldn’t be able to visit friends and family, or live an independent life without them.  There are many reasons why people catch our buses, but we strive to offer a high quality experience for each and every one of them, and we rely on our drivers to deliver this service with a smile.

Our services run across Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and to and from Newport.  We operate 7 days a week from early morning until late in the evening, therefore, the role requires shift work.  This means you will be required to follow a rota which involves some early morning starts or late finishes on some days, including weekend work.  You may also be required to work on Bank Holidays and other public holidays.

You’ll be required to operate a number of different routes and bus types, and have the skills and patience to be able to concentrate under different driving conditions.

You will be the face-to-face contact with our customers, so it’s vital you are presentable and courteous.  A uniform will be supplied to you when you pass your practical test, and it’s your responsibility to ensure you look smart and in-keeping with the company’s uniform policy whilst on duty.

You’ll find that every day is different, so if you fancy an office with a view, this could be the role for you!

There may be opportunities to work overtime on either your rest day, or in addition to a normal working day. This is voluntary and paid at the prevailing rates and must be in line with driving hours and working time regulations.

Holiday is taken on an allocated basis given the nature of our operations, but you may be able to request dates. However, this may only be granted subject to mutual agreements and operational requirements.

Free travel

You will be provided with a free travel pass, which may be used to travel on all Cardiff Bus services at any time. You may also be entitled to a free spouse and child pass.

If you have any further questions, please get in touch.
